Love & Other Social Issues (2008)

Malcolm-Jamal Warner, famous for his acting role as Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show, performed as a stage, television and film actor for over 20 years and is now an established bass player with a band. As a musician, he has already opened for several known acts such as Earl Klugh and the late Luther Vandross. Says Warner, "Because I’m not looking toward this to make me rich and famous, I have the luxury to truly approach music as an artist. Since there is such a negative preconception of actors as recording artists, it was important that I have the creative freedom I needed, unencumbered by someone else’s idea of what’s good."

His independent project Miles Long (Love, and Other Social Issues), a 14-track CD mixture of R&B, jazz and neo-soul, is a progressive extension of his being, blending spirituality with ecstasy. He embraces all assortments of the critical aspects of life. The CD’s design and his website (https://malcolmjamalwarner.com) speak with a significant emphasis on urban appeal, fusing poetry and expression.

Who would have predicted something as open and intense as this project from a person that we all knew and love as "little Theo"? But Warner doesn’t hold back on the disc, ranging from the Public Enemy vibe of "Running On Empty" to a DMX-style take on "InnerCity Visions." "Keep Smilin" speaks of love, beauty and quality, while "Soundcheck" has a modern day John Coltrane feel with the finesse of Herbie Hancock.

A few of the songs are a bit hardcore for the casual listener.  But for those in the mood for something edgy and controversial, Miles Long (Love, and Other Social Issues) is a winner. Recommended.
