(January 31, 2026) In our hearts, he will forever be the level-headed, often frustrated son Lamont in the hit 70s television comedy Sanford and Son, but Demond Wilson was much, much more. Sadly, Mr. Wilson has died at the age of 79 after a battle with cancer.
Born in Valdosta, Georgia, and raised in New York City, Wilson came of age during a fertile period for Black arts and performance. He trained in theater and honed his craft on the stage before television stardom arrived suddenly in 1972. As Lamont, serving as the straight man alongside the acerbic comic genius Redd Foxx, Wilson was the show’s steady anchor. While Foxx delivered fireworks, Wilson provided both grounding and exquisite comic timing. Sanford and Son became an historic television show.
While Sanford and Son was Wilson’s most notable acting vehicle, he remained a staple on television through the mid-80s with the series Baby…I’m Back and The New Odd Couple (where he played the curmudgeonly Oscar Madison). Wilson was also a talented dancer, as he showed a surprised audience in an episode of Sanford (see video below).
A spiritual man, Wilson’s faith was as important as any element in his life. He appeared on Christian television programs over the years, and was ordained as a minister in the Church of God in Christ. He also wrote several books on religious matters, as well as his own autobiography, Second Banana: The Bittersweet Memoirs of the Sanford & Son Years.
While his legacy will always be anchored to Lamont Sanford, Wilson lived his life as a man of both talent and conviction, and will be remembered long after today’s sad news.
