“Fool If You Think It’s Over” singer Chris Rea dies at 74

(December 23, 2025) He only had intermittent success in the US, but singer and guitarist Chris Rea long occupied a distinctive lane in British popular music, blending blues-rooted guitar work with a gravelly, world-weary vocal style that made him one of the most recognizable voices of the last half century. We are sad to report Mr. Rea’s passing at age 74.

Born in Middlesbrough, England, Rea grew up immersed in American blues and rock, inspired by artists like Muddy Waters, Ry Cooder, and Eric Clapton. A late bloomer by pop standards, he didn’t pick up the guitar seriously until his early twenties, developing a slide-heavy style that emphasized feel over flash. He came out of the box with an auspicious 1978 debut album, Whatever Happened to Benny Santini? (produced by Elton John collaborator Gus Dudgeon), which introduced him to a wide audience through the international hit single “Fool (If You Think It’s Over).”

Rea’s American profile soon cooled, though he was found by the burgeoning Smooth Jazz radio format and had an unlikely hit with the breezy “On The Beach” late in the late 80s. Meanwhile, Rea’s popularity soared in the UK and Europe. Albums like Water Sign, New Light Through Old Windows, and the #1 The Road to Hell solidified his reputation as a master of atmospheric adult rock. He also gained holiday immortality with the #1 hit “Driving Home for Christmas,” a bouncy seasonal staple that continues to chart top 10, year after year in December, and over a half billion Spotify streams. Over time, Rea leaned more toward his blues influences, and he recorded successfully into the 2020s.

Chris Rea’s work never appeared contrived or trend-chasing. He was an artist who followed his muse in front of us for nearly five decades, and took us along with him to enjoy the ride. For those unfamiliar with his work after “Fool,” it is worth checking out. May he rest in peace.
