They arose from humble beginnings to become two of the greatest music men of the 20th Century, and their impact is just as strong a quarter of the way through the 21st. We are proud to present the 2025 SoulTracks Lifetime Achievement Award to Brian and Eddie Holland. Along with their songwriting–production partner Lamont Dozier, the Holland brothers played a defining role in shaping the “Motown Sound,” the dominant popular music movement of the 1960s and the Sound of Young America for a generation. The remaining 2025 SoulTracks Readers’ Choice Award winners will be announced on December 8.
Hailing from Detroit, Michigan, Eddie Holland initially found his voice as a recording artist, while Brian Holland and Lamont Dozier collaborated on composing and production. As Detroit’s burgeoning R&B scene coalesced around Motown’s ascension, the trio forged a partnership under which Brian and Lamont handled melody and studio production, while Eddie focused on lyrics and vocal arrangements.
During the 1960s heyday of Motown, HDH was perhaps the most prolific and successful songwriting and production team in the world. They were responsible for a string of landmark, chart-topping hits for a number of Motown greats, including The Supremes (“Where Did Our Love Go,” “Baby Love,” “Stop! In the Name of Love,” and “You Keep Me Hangin’ On”), The Four Tops (“I Can’t Help Myself,” “Reach Out I’ll Be There,” and “Baby I Need Your Loving”), Marvin Gaye (“How Sweet It Is”), The Isley Brothers (“This Old Heart of Mine”), and so many others
Their production style was unmistakable: driving bass lines, tambourine-accented beats, sharp piano riffs, compelling call-and-response backing vocals and an urgency that listeners found irresistible. By 1964-65, the trio had become Motown’s central hit-factory: Brian and Eddie were appointed to executive roles—Brian as vice-president of creative evaluation, Eddie as head of A&R.
Toward the end of the decade Holland–Dozier–Holland left Motown to start their own Detroit-based labels, Hot Wax Records and Invictus Records, creating a new generation of hits for artists such as Freda Payne, The Chairmen of the Board, and The Honey Cone.
The legacy of Brian Holland, Eddie Holland and the sadly departed Lamont Dozier (d. 2022) is vast: they wrote and produced over 50 Top Ten Pop or R&B hits. They have been inducted into both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. And, most importantly, their songs are woven into the fabric of the Great American Songbook and are as revered now as they were during their Motown peak more than a half century ago.
We are honored to present this SoulTracks Lifetime Achievement Award to two musical geniuses who virtually define the term “living legends,” Brian and Eddie Holland.
