SoulTracks Lost Gem: Freda Payne and Tavares created a winner together

tavares-freda

When I started SoulTracks back in 2003, the first article I ever wrote was about Tavares. The five brothers from New Bedford, Massachusetts really define the term “Unsung,” and we wanted to give them some much deserved shine right off the bat at SoulTracks.

Another artist who has created great music for a half century is the beautiful and talented Freda Payne, who scored a #1 hit with “Band of Gold” and kept going from there. Freda has continued to release new music well into the 21st century, and still packs in audiences wherever she goes.

Not too many soul music fans remember that these two acts joined together for a single song back in 1977, which was part of the hit Tavares album, Love Storm. The tasty midtempo number “I Wanna See You Soon” had a mild Latin beat and harmonies that went on for days. The song was released as a single in the UK, but not here in the US — we think it would have been a hit just about anywhere.

“I Wanna See You Soon” was tough to find for many years, but fortunately is available on streaming services. And it is our latest SoulTracks Lost Gem. Check it out below and enjoy this pairing made in Heaven.
