In the years that SoulTracks has been around, there’s no doubt that one of our favorite singer/songwriters has been past Readers’ Choice Award winner Frank McComb. His top notch keyboard work, his memorable compositions and that voice have combined to create some truly classic songs.
And as I look back over his discography, a few songs stand out: His stop-the-clock version of “His Eye Is On The Sparrow” stands in my top ten recordings of all time. And then there is his chilling, 2003 masterpiece, “When You Call My Name,” a song that simply cut through me the first time I heard it…and every time since. The song, written by noted soul man Donnie, is song filled with almost unbounded emotion; a man sings to his love with a depth of feeling so strong, the love itself becomes his breath of life, as expressed in the refrain “When you call my name / you call me into existence.” Steve “The Scotsman” Harvey’s haunting, full production is the perfect complement to the passionate words, and McComb’s earnest, rich vocals provide a transcendant five minutes.
It’s nearly impossible to listen to this song without stopping to marvel at its perfection. If you haven’t heard it before, put everything down now and enjoy.
