Back in 1999, Eric Benet was an emerging young star when he really broke through on his platinum selling sophomore album, A Day In The Life. It was a commercial and critical triumph that showed he was not just a matinee idol-looking star, but a true new musical force.
Most of the attention for that album came from the duet with Tamia, “Spend My Life With You,” and the nifty remake of Toto’s “Georgy Porgy,” but there were lots of other great cuts on that disc.
“Why You Follow Me,” written by Benet with Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Chalmers Alford, is the familiar story of a man who is falling in love, but unfortunately it is with his best friend’s girlfriend. And that feeling “follows” him throughout the day, haunting him even as he tries to shake it.
I’ve been tempted by forbidden love before
But why must she be everythin
That I’ve been praying for
Now this burning in my heart will I ignore
When I know that she’ll be knocking at my door.
He is feeling temptation, and so are we when we listen to this terrific number. It is our latest SoulTracks Lost Gem. Check it out below and tell us what you think.
