September 12, 2019 – The UK artist Corrine Bailey Rae’s stock in trade, which we have celebrated since her #1 debut album was released in 2006, is an often sublime brand of delicate and organic new soul/R&B. So when she recently sat side by side pianist Jon Batiste on Steven Colbert’s televised Late Show, with no time for rehearsal, one would have expected her to offer up one of her several R&B hits. But luckily for fans, she instead sang the jazz standard “The Very Thought of You” and showed another side of herself entirely.
This quietly beautiful performance is one for the ages. Bailey Rae effortlessly phrases like a chanteuse from the 1930s, and Batiste gracefully supports her every step of the way. Enjoy.
