(September 2, 2026) She was a singer’s singer, one of those rare artists who was as admired by peers as by fans. Today we are sad to pass on the news of the passing of singer Cassandra Wilson at age 70. With her unmistakably deep, smoky voice and adventurous approach to song interpretation, Wilson became one of the most acclaimed jazz vocalists of the 1990s and beyond. Her death was reported by Jackson, Mississippi television station WLBT following a statement from Mayor John Horhn.
Born in Jackson, Wilson began playing piano and guitar as a child before developing as a vocalist. After spending time performing in New Orleans, she moved to New York in the early 1980s, where she became associated with saxophonist Steve Coleman and the influential M-Base Collective, an experimental group of young musicians that also included Greg Osby and Geri Allen.
Wilson recorded several albums during the 1980s, but her career took a major leap with her 1993 Blue Note debut, Blue Light ’Til Dawn. Working with producer Craig Street, she created a spare, roots-oriented sound that brought blues, folk and R&B into contemporary jazz, while transforming songs by artists ranging from Robert Johnson to Van Morrison and Joni Mitchell. The album was both a critically and commercial success, and became one of the defining works of her career.
She followed with the equally successful New Moon Daughter, which earned Wilson the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance, and continued her eclectic approach on albums including Traveling Miles, her tribute to Miles Davis, Belly of the Sun, Glamoured and Silver Pony. Her 2008 collection Loverly brought her a second Grammy, this time for Best Jazz Vocal Album.
