(March 25, 2025) Tonight we say a sad goodbye to guitarist Fred Jenkins, best known for his work as a longtime member of The Gap Band. Jenkins played the driving guitar behind such hits as “Burn Rubber,” “You Dropped A Bomb On Me” and “Party Train” during that group’s Imperial Period. Jenkins had been suffering from diabetes for several years.
Jenkins was also active in the productions of Rick James during the 1980s, including albums by the Mary Jane Girls. Over the years, Jenkins’ proficiency led to him becoming a “go to” guitarist for artists like Tyrone Davis, Pebbles, Boyz II Men and Janet Jackson. He also toured with post-Chaka Khan incarnation of Rufus.
Jenkins name was not entirely familiar to the millions of fans who jammed to his now-classic work. But he was loved and respected by his musical peers. Rest in peace.
