Flashback Soul: Rufus & Chaka Khan Plead “Tell Me Something Good”

kek3

Some bands bring so much energy and chemistry to the stage live that their studio recordings, even when well produced and commercially successful, seem somehow unrepresentative. Witness Rufus & Chaka Khan, who ripped the roof off the Midnight Special in 1974 with their  hit  “Tell Me Something Good.”  The single of the track, which in 1975 would earn the band its first Grammy award, is of course legendary but sounds utterly restrained when placed alongside this electrically-charged TV performance.

Chaka, then only 21, is most decidedly here setting the audience’s “stuff on fire.”  So step back in time below and give up the funk!
