14 years ago, fresh from her Tony-award winning performance in the Broadway musical Aida, the singer and actress Heather Headley lept into the soul/R&B arena with her debut album This Is Who I Am. The album peaked at # 38 on the Billboard 200 and was certified gold by the RIAA for exceeding over a half million in sales. It also earned Headley two Grammy nominations for Best New Artist and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.
We feature here Headley performing live the album’s first single, “He Is.” It’s a slow-groove paen to her man and all that he means to her. The track showcases Headley’s rich, warm tone and gifted use of dynamics and nuance to craft the perfect, and seemingly effortless, lead vocal. Enjoy.
