Flashback Soul: Faith Evans Signals “Stop N Go”

faith_evans

Almost 11 years ago, the singer/songwriter Faith Evans released her 4th album, The First Lady, which remains the highest-charting and best-selling album of her career, peaking at # 2 on the Billboard 200.   Rich in Motown and neo-soul influences, the album was supported by 3 singles, with the track “Again” reaching  # 7 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Chart

But as is often the case in this series, we are featuring here a deep album cut, perhaps the record’s strongest track,“Stop N Go.”  Produced by Carvin & Ivan, it features a swaying, old-school beat and tells the tale of Evans’ internal struggle over whether to keep playing “hard to get.”  The track also highlights the ease with which Evans switches between her upper and lower vocal registers, and her inspired use of basketball metaphors in the lyrics will make you smile.  Enjoy.
