(September 17, 2019) We’re not sure how you would classify UK singer and songwriter Yola, so we won’t try. We’ll just listen instead. Yola had spent much of the last decade as a background singer for such artists as The Chemical Brothers and Iggy Azalea, but she was born to move to the front of the stage.
All that came to be earlier this year as she released her debut album, Walk Through Fire, produced by Dan Aurbach and recorded in Nashville with many of that city’s elite musicians. And the results were simply stunning, an amalgamation of sounds that go from soul to country to rock and more.
The critically acclaimed album brought to us a song that is one of the most enrapturing of the year. “Faraway Look” has a Phil Spector-worthy wall of sound and glorious vocals, all wrapped around a song that is both retro and futuristic. And it is simply fantastic.
We are sorry we didn’t bring this to SoulTrackers earlier in the year, but we’re making up for it now. Check out “Faraway Look” and get ready to hear more about Yola.
