First Listen: NBA star Victor Oladipo covers a Donny Hathaway classic

(September 1, 2017) Well, if you asked me this morning who I was going to hear singing the oft-recorded Leon Russell/Donny Hathaway classic “A Song For You,” I would not have guessed former Indiana University and now Indiana Pacers star player, Victor Oladipo. The former College Player of the Year, who recently came back to the state of his collegiate glory in the Paul George trade with Oklahoma City, has been talking for awhile about his desire to have a recording career. And now he’s shown he has some singing chops.

VO’s cover of “A Song For You” doesn’t break any new ground in arrangement, but he does make it more contemporary with a rather odd new verse about shopping on Rodeo Drive. Vocally, he’s solid. I’d certainly like to hear more — and more challenging — music from him. But he’s made use of his off-season nicely, and has given his fans a peek at a hidden talent.

Check “A Song For You” below and tell us what you think.
