(June 28. 2024) Trade Stevens’ new song, “Lost 2 Much” is about the pressure and freedom that comes with the realization that a person has hit bottom. On one hand, you find yourself in the depths of despair, loneliness or poverty. On the other hand, there’s no place to go but up.
“Lost 2 Much” finds Stevens encouraging himself not to be defined by the misfortunes and mistakes of the past, but rather to learn from them. That can be easier said than done, and that’s a fact that Stevens acknowledges in “Lost 2 Much.” However, we are left with a stark choice: We can remain stuck, fearful that the losses will mount. Or we can see an opportunity in the crisis that confronts us.
Stevens uses his rangy voice to passionately advocate for the latter. Singing over a percussive arrangement that includes elements of contemporary R&B that slides into a reggae styled bounce during the hook, Stevens details the competing forces that are present at all times and buffet us during times of trouble.
