(October 9, 2024) We hadn’t previously heard the music of Toronto-based band The Free Label, but one listen to their excellent upcoming album Songs For Sienna shows this group to the natural descendants of pop/soul masters from Hall & Oates to Mamas Gun.
The band (Cole Mendez on Keys, Jacob Thompson on Keys / Vocals, Jason Martin on Drums, Joshua Tsakas on Lead Vocals / Sax, Malik Mungo on Guitar / Vocals, and Mathew Fantini on Bass) create music that is a tasty blend of 70s disco, soul and light funk, with a keen sense of melody and fun throughout. And that combination drives the yacht-y single “Change Your Mind,” a falsetto-led midtempo that would have been right at home on 1978 radio in between Player’s “Baby Come Back” and Heatwave’s “Always & Forever.”
