(February 8, 2023) “Missing You” by Verne “VA” Allison is an homage to the passionate and soulful music made by one of my favorite vocal groups, The Dells. Allison probably knows more about The Dells and the place that they hold American popular music than anyone else. Allison is the son and namesake of one of the two surviving members of the legendary quintet.

“Missing You” will have an air of familiarity to Dells fans because the tune reimagines “Baby Come Back,” a song that “VA” wrote for The Dells back in 2000. While musical structure of “Missing You” is like “Baby Come Back,” “VA” uses different lyrics to tell the story of a man who seeking reconciliation and forgiveness from his woman.

What has not changed is the passion, honesty, and vulnerability that “VA” puts into the vocal. Trying to walk in the same territory as the great Marvin Junior is no easy challenge, but “VA” proves that his worth as a vocalist. “Missing You” is a tribute to The Dells. Allison brings in Marvin Junior Jr., the son of the late, great lead singer to sing on the record, and his VA’s father and with Mickey McGill, the last two surviving members of The Dells, make cameo appearances in the accompanying video.
