She may be best known as the winner of Season 5 of NBC’s The Voice, but Kingston, Jamaica-born Tessanne Chin is more than a reality show contestant. This girl can sing. So, it put us in a bit of a quandary when we were listening to her song, “Heaven Knows.” It is a great song with a killer hook and a top notch performance by her. But was it really soul music? You know, the kind that we cover on SoulTracks?
So I posted the song and asked for advice on Facebook. And overwhelmingly, I received feedback that the song and performance were too good to not share with SoulTrackers, even if the song doesn’t fit within narrow genre boundaries. Well, that’s what I wanted to hear, because this song has been an earworm for me this week that I’ve been playing over and over, and I wanted others to hear it. Co-written by Chin with Charles Harmon, Angel Higgs, Claude Kelly and Kyle Owens, “Heaven Knows” has a hook that goes on for days and Tessanne sings the heck out of it. It is a great….POP…song.
