Welcome to the newest installment of our Another Groove series, dedicated to introducing new music that is neither “pure” soul nor R&B but which includes some elements of those genres, often rhythmic, by artists generally categorized outside of the soul arena. This week we feature the track “I Want More” by the Tedeschi Trucks Band from its new album Let Me Get By.
Formed in 2010, Tedeschi Trucks is fronted by vocalist/guitarist Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks, who for many years was a lead guitarist of the Allman Brothers and is also her husband. The band’s debut record, Revelator, won the 2012 Grammy Award for Best Blues Album, and blues/rock is no doubt its sweet spot. But the band sometimes ventures into other genres and rhythms, as this track bears witness. It leaps out of the gate with a propulsive beat, horns, and vocals suggestive of the great Motown/Stax hits of the 60’s before shifting the groove four minutes in to become a more contemporary, bluesy instrumental with lovely flute accents. Enjoy.
