(May 11, 2023) Tanqueray Hayward has always possessed an old musical soul. She’s not the kind of singer who tries to sound young to appeal to the Gen Z demographic. The subject matter that she addresses in her songs are mature — just not the kind of “mature” where you need to cover the kids’ ears of turn the volume down while riding with them in the car.
Hayward’s songs cover the gamut of topics that grown folks discuss before or after church or while waiting for their kids’ practices and rehearsals to begin or end. Spirituality and the transparency, or lack thereof, of romantic partners are among the recurring themes Hayward addresses in her songs.
“Waiting for You,” Hayward’s follow up to “You Lied,” is a throwback in a couple of ways. First, it’s a song about a woman voicing her hopes and desires for true love that is expressed in the form of a daydream. “Waiting for You” is a throwback from a musical arrangement standpoint.
Hayward wrote “Waiting for You” as her tribute to Motown, and that influence can be heard in an arrangement that captures that innocence, optimism and joy that had young America dancing in the streets. This one will have the forever young stepping. Check it out here.
