(June 14, 2019) Tanika Charles has been making quite a stir in the Toronto area for a few years. Her album Soul Run turned a lot of heads, as Tanika’s voice and classic soul vibe created a kind of timeless feel to her work.
Tanika is now back with a new album called The Gumption, produced by a stable of some of Canada’s finest musical minds including DJ Kemo (The Rascalz, Kardinal Offishall), Chin Injeti (DJ Khalil, Eminem, Drake) and Daniel Lee (Hooded Fang, Phedre),
The first single from the new album has the feel of a classic Betty Wright number, as Tanika challenges her man to move deeper into a relationship that he may be taking for granted. Tanika tells us, “‘Tell Me Something’ is a song about establishing terms. We sometimes tend to date in grey areas, not knowing exactly where we stand on commitment. We don’t want to take things too fast, and don’t want to rock the boat for fear of scaring people off. Taking things slow morphs into a settled compromise. Tell Me Something is the point where settling no longer cuts it and you have to lay your cards out. The video starts with my morning routine through the eyes of that ambiguous lover. With sunlight comes clarity. We may be used to meeting at the bar and having a good time, but there needs to be more. Even while on stage I’m sure to slide a little side eye to let them know what is undefined cannot last. It’s time to make a decision, and it shouldn’t be difficult.”
We’re proud to present the World Premiere for the video of “Tell Me Something.” We think SoulTrackers are going to dig this number and will be looking for more from Tanika Charles. Check it out below and tell us what you think!
