(February 21, 2025) Juno Award-nominated R&B/soul vocalist Tanika Charles is taking Cupid to task with “Don’t Like You Anymore,” a smoky soulful gem punctuated with saucy backing vocals, funky guitar and a poignant message from the heart.
On the surface, you’re hearing a woman who is fed up while standing in the shadows of love. But deep inside the lyrics is an intimate eye-opening personal story coming from Charles’ pen that travails the agonizing hardships with her own mother. “I know this will come across harsh to some, but…she was unavailable emotionally for me my entire upbringing, and eventually unavailable physically too,” the Toronto, Ontario singer writes. “I’ve tried to understand, to make amends, to assist where I can, but the emotional labor is too heavy, and the reciprocation is too faint to justify trying anymore.”
Simmering in a slow cooker of ‘70s Chi-Lites-meets-Betty Wright R&B, the Scott McCannell-produced track is expected to grab the ears of plenty, even diehard hip-hop fans looking for something old AND something new to sample.
Check out the new track…and expect more from Tanika when her forthcoming LP, Reasons to Stay, drops later this May.
