(May 21, 2020) Sulpacio Jones has won over many SoulTracks fans through her career, especially for the 2015 full-length, Live Love Fly High. As a nominee for the 2019 Bright Star Award, the San Diego singer/songwriter has brightened the urban indie world with her innovative melodic skills – mixing classic R&B and hip-hop with a modern flavor. But as demonstrated in her body of work since her debut EP in 2013, Jones’ effortless soulful vocals are what really make her music shine.
In our latest First Listen installment, Jones’ latest track, “Flight,” drops an atmospheric journey of pure fantasy. The thickly layered, heavy bass-synth backing from producer Tony Ozier echoes the old school R&B vibe frosted with dreamy cello fills by Skip VonKuske. While Jones’ sultry lead is dependable, part of the production loses its luster when the beats roll in and the song’s hook tends to be somewhat grating. That aside, it is always a treat to hear Jones’ confident voice, which registers highly on the soulful vocal scale. Enjoy the Flight.
