(December 30, 2025) SoulTracks fans have been more than well acquainted with Stone Paxton for his work alongside Motown’s funkmaster Rick James’ Stone City Band. And there is no doubt the current Las Vegas resident has extended the funk era into the 2000’s, shaping his solo musical artistry successfully in the independent ranks while honoring the legacy of James, Parliament, Prince, and others.
Besides his appreciation of the funk language, Paxton’s intricate storylines and old school R&B grooves — mostly revolving around romance – have garnered our attention on several occasions, such as “Absolutely N2U” and “History.” Throughout his solo chapter, Paxton earned several accolades, such as the Las Vegas’ Black Music Awards-Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012, and placed 6 Top 30 songs on the U.K. Soul Charts.
For Paxton’s return to First Listen, his latest track, “Can We Get It Right?” (Gumbfactory Music) locks in his funk base with sheer romantic perseverance. The lyrics by Paxton nail down relentless confidence in finding the right partner through divine intervention:
“We know that love is heaven sent
But God has never made mistakes
Know that this is by design.”
A mid break rap confirms that no one can steal this special romance, then concluding with a spoken word that his partner’s beauty shines brightly. This scenario is held together by slinky bass, solid snares and a sea of synths frosted by tasty background harmonies, co-produced by Dre Hendrix & Paxton.
