It’s hard to believe it was 26 years ago, but in 1990 the artists Bell Biv DeVoe unveiled their unique blend of soul, hip hop, funk and pop — labelled the “New Jack Swing” sound — on their debut album Poison which reached # 1 on Billboard’s Hip Hop/R&B chart and sold over 5 million copies. It is a seminal record in music history whose influence is still felt, and heard, in music today.
Which brings us to Teyana Taylor, the Harlem-based singer/songwriter who late last year released an EP The Cassette Tape 1994 as a tribute to her 90’s influences. We feature here Teyana’s track “Undercover,” in which she samples the opening beat of BBD’s track “Poison” to create a compelling, head-nodding homage to the band. The visual below is a humorous and entertaining visit back to 90’s fashions and dance moves with Teyana delivering a smooth, smoky vocal. Enjoy.
