(June 18, 2017) Few people other than TV trivia buffs would have guessed that Family Matters is the second longest running American sitcom with a predominately black cast, trailing only The Jeffersons, which ran 11 seasons to Family Matters’ nine, and that only The Jeffersons and Tyler Perry’s House of Payne have aired more episodes than Family Matters’ 215. That’s longevity.

One reason for the show’s long run is that it featured a cast of strong and distinct characters, with Winslow family’s patriarch Carl and his foil and nerdy next door neighbor Steve Urkel being two who blasted through the boundaries of how black men are represented on television.

Darius McCrary broke through by playing Eddie Winslow, and he has continued acting on TV, in live action and as a voiceover character in animated films and on the stage.  voiceover roles. Still McCrary said that music has always been his first love, and he has focused on that aspect of his artistic personality over the last few years. McCrary’s latest single is a mid-tempo acoustic funk number titled “Fresh” and we preview it here on SoulTracks as a first listen. Check it out.
