(July 16, 2021) In the 1970s, there was no R&B vocal group that was hotter than The Spinners. With producer supreme Thom Bell by their side, the quintet scored hit after hit, and delivered some of the most elegant Philadelphia soul albums of the time — LPs that are still revered by soul music fans more than four decades later.
While illness and sad deaths of members have left the group with only one original member, the great Henry Fambrough, the Spinners have soldiered on in concert with a lineup that includes Jessie Peck, Marvin Taylor, Ronnie Moss, and CJ Jefferson.
Now, seemingly out of the blue, the group is readying its first new album in more than two decades. Round The Block and Back Again arrives later this summer, and the first sneak peek is the midtempo number, “Cliché.” Produced by legendary music man Preston Glass, “Cliché” is a pleasant updating of the Spinners sound, with strong group harmonies and alternating leads wrapped around a light arrangement that has a classic soul vibe.
What a pleasant surprise to hear new music from an all-time SoulTracks favorite act, and even better that they sound so good. Check out “Cliché” below, and welcome The Spinners back to SoulTracks!
