First Listen: Sophia Bromberg shines again on “Sesame”

(October 6, 2023) A sultry, sophisticated tribute to beauty and resilience, tethered to a hypnotic, mid-tempo staccato rhythm and sung breathily, yet assuredly, with a surety and wisdom belying the performer’s tender years: this may be the first time you’ve heard of San Francisco, California native Sophia Bromberg, but with gifts like hers, this 18-year-old ingenue will become a familiar name and voice soon enough, thanks to the talents on full display in her latest single, “Sesame.”

Gifts like Sophia’s—a floating, yet rich soprano, along with prowess on the guitar and piano— are rarely encountered with adults twice her age, much less developed so assuredly as a teenager, but that just gives Bromberg all the more time to cultivate them. And like the rarest of wines, “Sesame’s” dreamy lyrics, and the emotive, yet unhurried delivery hold a savory style that ripens with each listen: “Toasted maple leaves, woven through her hair, sweet like honeybees, she don’t really care/ Daughter of the sun, sister to the wind, descendant of the sea, little Sesame.”

Crisp as the fall, refreshing as chilled apple cider and as mesmerizing as a sunset, add “Sesame” to your rotation knowing that more of Sophia’s catalog will shortly follow. Skills like Bromberg’s are too large to remain hidden for long and you won’t be able to escape their reach (nor will you want to).
