First Listen: Sonny Gullage gives us a bluesy “Kiss”

(October 31, 2024) Plenty of artists have an origin story that begins with them writing their first songs when they were in elementary school. Sonny Gullage has that origin story as well. However, the song this New Orleans born keyboardist, singer and songwriter penned addressed a topic that belied his age. Gullage’s first song at the age of 12 dealt with the devastating impact that an oil spill had on the waters of the Gulf Coast.

That was the first hint the world had at Gullage’s gift as a lyricist, singer and observer. Those gifts have only been honed in subsequent years that have seen him audition for “American Idol,” and make it to the Showstoppers round. The journey culminates in the release of Gullage’s debut album Just Be Free, which included the rollicking love song “Just Kiss Me, Baby.”

“Just Kiss Me, Baby” is a joyful tune that captures the feeling of excitement and mutual attraction that happens when a romance is new. Gullage possesses a baritone that is powerful and passionate, and his keyboard playing is deeply influenced by New Orleans blues and gospel. Gullage was introduced to the former through his father, bassist Tony Gullage, who performed with legends like Dr. John. Meanwhile, Gullage’s grandmother, Sister Albertina Gullage, released gospel albums in the 1960.

The talent and the legacy shines through on Sonny Gullage’s latest single. Check out “Just Kiss Me, Baby” here.
