(July 3, 2019) While it was never 100 percent accurate to say that Americans turned their back on blues, jazz, funk and R&B good, nobody can doubt that fans and musicians in other parts of the world treasure these American cultural exports. So SoulTrackers won’t be shocked at the back story of a vocalist such as the United Kingdom born SK. She grew up listening to her family vinyl collection that included the legendary voices of Aretha Franklin and Donny Hathaway. Later, during her teen years, SK’s musical tastes expanded to include jazz. Then, she got her heart broken and SK had the full range of experiences to become a soul singer.
She displays her chops on her new single “When You Know.” Fans who listen to this mid-tempo track will hear a singer who sings with soulfulness and a jazz singer’s sense of phrasing and timing. “When You Know” is a well-crafted work of adult contemporary R&B. SK’s vocals and the ephemeral air keyboards float above the grooving foundation provided by a popping percussion, bumping bass line and blues infused guitar riffs.
