(March 5, 2021) For weeks, music fans have been salivating over the announced collaboration coming between young music stars Bruno Mars and Anderson.Paak, and the first release of their resulting band, Silk Sonic, doesn’t disappoint. Silk Sonic open its history with the song and video for “Leave The Door Open,” and it is all that.
Based on the contributing artists, you would expect that Silk Sonic would provide modern R&B with a sense of classic soul, and that’s exactly what “Door” does. Opening with a hip-hop vibe, it isn’t long before it explodes into a late 70s-style big ballad, a la Ray, Goodman & Brown. And it is in that direction that it goes for the remainder of its four minutes, ending with a full wall-of-sound, glorious crescendo.
There’s no question that these are artists in the middle of their creative and commercial Imperial Period, and it is satisfying that they’ve come together for a collaboration that is as good as the sum of its talented parts.
