Longtime SoulTrackers know that we love singer/songwriter Siedah Garrett. Since first coming to our attention on her 1987 duet with Michael Jackson, “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You,” and her co-writing of “Man In the Mirror,”she has played a role in some of the great songs of our time — and has been rewarded with award after award and a revered place among pop and soul artists.
Siedah is working on an album of new songs and covers, featuring collaborations with some of her favorite artists, including Faith Evans, Chante Moore, Sheila E., Vanessa Williams, Naturally 7, Brand New Heavies and Dave Koz, with production by Ray Parker, Jr., Barry Eastmond and Shea Taylor.
The first single from the upcoming project is a duet with the legendary Kathy Sledge of Sister Sledge. “Cupid is a DJ” is fun, rollicking dance number that will get your feet and your seat moving. Siedah tells us, “I wanted to write an ode to every DJ. Their talents and skills at creating a fun atmosphere in the clubs often lead to the start of long-lasting relationships. Because the track was very reminiscent of the Nile Rodgers sound, I felt that Kathy Sledge would be the perfect duet partner. I have always loved her incredible and distinctive voice, and we get along like sisters ’cause “We Are Family”!
Take a listen to “Cupid is a DJ” below and enjoy this classic pairing. We can’t wait to hear more from Siedah!
