(August 18, 2023) When it comes to R&B girl groups of the 70’s and 80’s, The Jones Girls are one of the most celebrated down to this day, with Philly Soul classics like “You Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else,” “I Just Love the Man”, “Nights Over Egypt”, and “Who Can I Run To?” (which went to #1 in 1995 when covered by Xscape).
Shirley Jones began her solo career in 1986 with the #1 hit “Do You Get Enough Love” and continues to release music of her own today, but always with her sisters Valorie and Brenda in mind, who passed away in 2001 and 2017 respectively. Shirley’s forthcoming album In Loving Memory is dedicated to them.
The first single off this project is a sweet tune called “When You Love Somebody,” whichShirley describes as “a cross-generational true love song for all ages.” The lyrics explain the effect of finding that special someone who accepts you, flaws and all: your days feel brighter and your nights feel warmer. The song has that harmonious Jones Girls flavor and is easy to sing along to.
No doubt contributing to the cozy nature of this song is the fact that it was created in Detroit, Shirley’s hometown. She said: “I had to come home to people [that] I know would give me what I needed on this song.” The track was written by Detroit singer and SoulTracks favorite, Michon Young, and recorded in the city with its finest musicians. Shirley also arranged and produced the song with fellow Detroit native McKinley Jackson, who wrote and produced songs for The Jones Girls back in the day.
