(September 6, 2026) In the memorable decade of 90’s R&B, several male groups serenaded their way into fans’ hearts. One of those groups was Az Yet, best known for the hits “Last Night” and their soulful rendition of “Hard to Say I’m Sorry.” Shawn Rivera was a founding member of Az Yet. Now, he’s turning the page to a new chapter in his career as a solo artist.
Shawn has partnered with UK-based music company, The Rebirth Collective, and the first release from this new partnership is a fresh take on “This Is What You Are,” originally recorded by Italian soul and jazz singer Mario Biondi and The High Five Quintet. (The song, though not largely popular in the US, was a big hit in the UK and EU 20 years ago.) Biondi’s recording favors the straight-ahead/traditional jazz style, but Shawn’s remake features a different groove, literally. Dolce Groove, the house band for The Rebirth Collective, blends smooth jazz and funk with their instruments, as Shawn effortlessly drives the song down R&B Lane with vocals that are reminiscent of Eric Benét. However, Shawn still incorporates traditional jazz by his vocal scatting throughout the song. His remake has already found success, reaching #1 on the UK Soulbreakers Chart.
Over the years, Shawn Rivera has showcased his skills as a singer, songwriter, vocal arranger and producer, and this new chapter of his career focuses on his creativity as a producer.
