(February 16, 2021) Sharon Musgrave has planted roots firmly the R&B and dance music worlds since she released her first solo project Selah. Musgrave showcased her EDM chops on her 2014 project Get Down With Cha. However, Musgrave returns to R&B on “A Whole New Bag,” the latest release from her Jewelweed project.

“A Whole New Bag,” finds Musgrave bring funk into the mix on a song that tells a story about embarking on a relationship and all the questions the come with moving out of a solitary but predictable situation into something new. Fans of mid-tempo funk that is ready made for the steppers set will find a lot to like with this number. Musgrave actually brings a jazz sensibility to the vocal that contrasts nicely with the bouncy, on-the-one funk bass line.

Musgrave notes that the songs that she writes often have two meanings and that could be the case with “A Whole New Bag.” Perhaps she is takking about two people trying to renew a relationship and hoping that the second time will be better because they’ve learned from past mistakes. Maybe the whole new bag is all of the new baggage that they have picked up since the last time they were together. Perhaps it’s something else. Give it a listen and see what you think.
