(July 20, 2022) The Manchester-based duo Secret Night Gang is new to us, but if the single “Sun” is any indication of what’s to come, we’re hooked. Led by singer Kemani Anderson and saxman Callum Connell – and now including drummer Myke Wilson, bassist Juneroy and guitarist, Jack Duckham, SNG straddles the intersection of R&B, jazz and funk, providing music that hints at elements from Roy Ayers to the Ohio Players, totally convincingly.
“The Sun” is a languid ballad that wanders into acid jazz territory, a completely relaxed effort that mesmerizes throughout its seven-and-a-half minute run. Though a studio concoction, “The Sun” – with its ample solo instrumental jams — would be even more at home on a sun-going-down outdoor jam session on a Summer evening.
Unlike a period three-plus decades ago, there is simply so little out there like “The Sun,” and that what makes it all the more striking. Bravo, Secret Night Gang. More of this, please!
