First Listen: Sam Somebody and HG Soul team on touching “You Are”

(November 21, 2025) Every great song starts with an idea. Where those ideas spring from differs each time but ones that come from the heart resonate the most. Chicago-based saxophonist and educator Sam Somebody – who’s worked with the likes of Miki Howard and Solange – had the beautiful idea to create a song for his wife. He came up with the hook and then turned to HG Soul to compose more lyrics and sing lead vocals. The result is his latest release, “You Are.”

The record opens up with the smooth sounds of Sam on sax, followed up by HG’s vocal delivery, which was so powerful that Sam kept his first take. There was deep emotion behind that power. HG lost his significant other before the recording of “You Are,” and Sam noted that he sang the song “like he lived every word – because in a way, he did.”

“You Are” praises the woman of said affections as the reason for her man’s smile, as everything he needs and has hoped for, and as being his Paradise on earth. A song with that much heart is bound to touch the hearts of others, especially those who have found their special somebody or who yearn to do so.

Understanding that, Sam Somebody said that “You Are” – which took nearly a decade to perfect – is not only for his wife but “for anyone who’s ever loved deeply.” He added: “What started as a personal love song turned into something bigger — a tribute to love, loss, time, patience, and the people who bring music to life.”

Check out “You Are” below, enjoy the neo-soul vibe, and let your heart be moved.
