(February 26, 2026) The Atlanta based band Ruby Velle & the Soulphonics like to call their brand of classic R&B “cinematic soul.” The band doesn’t just make songs; they use their music to create the kind of dramatic tunes that are in search of movie in need of a soundtrack or theme song.
That’s the case of their latest tune, “The Deed,” that is featured in this First Listen. The song has the classic analog sound that one would expect for a seven-piece band that’s fronted by a vocalist with a raw, soulful voice. Listeners will hear tightly harmonic horns that stand the foundation of a funky rhythm section.
“The Deed” tells the story of a relationship that ends in the most drastic and no turning back way that a relationship can conclude. Feelings – and something more permanent – have been hurt. We can’t discount the possibility that ending this relationship involved illegalities. No matter, Velle sings with a brashness that telegraphs that there are no regrets on her part. He had it coming it coming.
“Wiped that smile off your face/You left me no choice/I’m embracing my mistakes/And heeding all my voices/Got you laying down/Between a rock and a hard place/They might never find you/But I’ll be fine regardless.”
