November 21, 2025 — Fans of the late Roy Hargrove will be pleased to hear that a new advance single, “Top of My Head,” was released today on all major streaming and downloading platforms. A soulful original never included on any of his studio albums, “Top of My Head” was a concert-set favorite – an intoxicating blend of swing, elevated improvisation, and warmth that showcased the telepathic interplay of Roy’s working quintet. Many musicians have characterized the song as a “modern jazz standard,” and the recording is especially notable for its inclusion of a rare, joyous vocal by Roy.
The recently mastered track was recorded live in 2017 at Seattle’s KNKX Public Radio and is from the forthcoming EP Roy Hargrove: Live at KNKX set for release by Roy Hargrove Legacy on January 7. The EP includes 3 additional, previously unreleased live recordings of original Hargrove compositions, each of which bridges hard bop, soul, and groove with effortless authenticity.
