First Listen: Another Roberta Flack gem reissued for the holidays

(November 17, 2025) One of the great gifts of this season has been the release of Holidays, an album of rare and previously vaulted songs by the pioneering songstress Roberta Flack. The initial single “Eternally” has gathered the most attention, but the album is chock full of gems that remind us of just how stunning even Flack’s unreleased work was.

Our newest spotlight from the project is “When There’s Love,” a gentle midtempo written by Flack’s longtime musical director, Shelton Becton, and featuring a choir of top tier session singers, giving the cut an exquisite depth that works beautifully. And of course, Roberta Flack leads the whole process royally.

Recorded in 1997, “When There’s Love” was previously released, but has been out-of-print for awhile. Now fortunately reissued, it is a holiday song about celebrating the blessings in one’s life, and its message feels just right at a time when folks may be focusing more on their stresses than their gifts:

Can we express ourselves with thanks and giving
Can we appreciate the joys of living
Is there a thought of kindness in your day
In all you say, then don’t delay

Music fans had Roberta Flack as a beacon for a half century, and “When There’s Love” and the entire Holidays album remind us of why we fell in love with her songs in the first place. Check it out below.
