First Listen: Reggie Boone asks the world “What’s Wrong”

(October 29, 2023) Nina Simone once said: “An artist’s duty is to reflect the times.”  Over the years, many singers have carried out that duty in their lyrics.  Classic songs like “A Change Is Gonna Come” by Sam Cooke and “What’s Going On?” by Marvin Gaye might come to your mind as examples.

The latest song by soul singer Reggie Boone follows that tried-and-true pattern.  Arranged by Felton Pilate of the legendary ConFunkShun, the track is entitled “What’s Wrong”; the lyrics find Reggie posing a question that we often ask ourselves or others when we constantly hear of or read news reports about senseless violence, whether in our local communities or in wars abroad.

Never the type to shy away from socially-conscious music, Reggie comments on the violent state of the world and how different it is from his childhood when he could have a fight and go about his life, rather than face the end of his life because of it.  In the song, Reggie doesn’t ask ‘What’s wrong’ in a general sense, but in a more personal way.  The lyrics paint the picture of him having a one-on-one intervention with someone who’s headed down the wrong path.

“Everybody’s upset; frowns on their face
Walking around acting crazy, shooting up the place
I’m not judging anybody; wanna help if I can
You’re a part of me, I’m a part of you; so help me understand…
What’s wrong? Talk to me
What’s wrong? Help me see
What’s wrong? What’s on your mind?”

“What’s Wrong?” has a deep message but an easygoing sound, blending R&B and smooth jazz featuring Al Bates on saxophone.  Take a listen below!
