(December 4, 2025) Being able to throw yourself into your art can be the catalyst for creating an even more authentic result. We hear actors and artists becoming one with the characters they portray, resulting in an elevated performance. This was the strategy for Raymond Coats on his latest single, “What Did I Do Wrong, Baby.”
A jazz and soul music veteran from Sacramento, California, Coats finds himself diving into a different genre for this offering. Leaning into influences such as Muddy Waters and Billie Holiday, Costs transforms into a blues singer and delivers an inspirational performance that deals with self-analyzing in a situation that hit home for him. In thinking about rekindling is relationship with his ex-wife, he does some soul searching, considering what he did wrong and what he can do differently. It’s a passionate performance set against the slow burn of a blues track that makes you feel every word, nuance and inflection.
As a result of Coats’ epiphany of “marketing himself as a blues singer” materializes, it will be exciting to see his evolution. In the meantime, “What Did I Do Wrong Baby” serves as a solid launching pad for this next stage of his career.
