(August 21, 2021) Soul music lovers of the 1970s have a soft spot for the incredible run of sophisticated music released during that decade by The Spinners, and produced by the legendary Thom Bell. Fewer casual fans know about the equally incredible songwriting trio behind so many of the group’s hits (as well as hits by other Philly soul stars), the team of Joseph Jefferson, Charles Simmons and Bruce Hawes. Sadly, both Jefferson and Hawes died in the past year, and a Chicago vocal trio has just released a single to pay homage to their long careers.
Poynt of Vu is a trio consisting of Stephen Thomas, Daniel Porter and longtime SoulTracks friend Byron Woods. They have been working on their craft separately and together for over two decades, and for their newest single, they’ve teamed with producer/keyboarist Mike Logan, Sr. (Will Downing) to give new life to a deep Spinners album classic.
“There’s No One Like You” was a highlight of The Spinners’ 1974 New And Improved album, and a smooth soul classic. Poynt of Vu gives a faithful reading, complete with elaborate harmonies. The trio sounds great, and gives a fitting tribute to a group of songwriters who brought a lot of joy to millions of soul music fans around the world. The fact that Bruce Hawes gave his blessing to the new recording makes it even more special.
Check out “There’s No One Like You,” and welcome Poynt of Vu to SoulTracks.
