First Listen: Phillip Brandon is “Runnin’ For You”

(August 23, 2024) Phillip Brandon is an artist who regularly amalgamates soul, pop and jazz. So, it’s no surprise to see that multi-talented singer/songwriter returns to a successful formula on this latest single, “Running For You.”

The R&B can be heard in an arrangement where a funky, mid-tempo bass line serves as the foundation for bluesy guitar licks and gospel inspired keyboard work. The jazz comes in the form of saxophone solos that use the rhythmic foundation to engage in flights of creative fancy, as well as in a musical conversation with Bandon’s resonate baritone.

Brandon’s vocals move from a conversational tone, where he lets his love interest know that his all his actions have a meaning that is deeper than what can be seen by the eye. All those words and deeds have one purpose – to become the best version of himself so that he can provide what she needs when she needs.

Like all great soul music, the lyrics point to a theme that incorporates spiritual elements that are present throughout “Running For You.” And that theme is one where Brandon is asking his lover to keep the faith. I’m working for you – for us – even if it appears that nothing is happening. “When you see me standing here passe/I’m just trying to find a better way,” Brandon croons in his distinctive baritone.

“Running For You” is a single from Brandon’s upcoming album Déjà vu. The single will be released in late August, but you can hear it here.
