First Listen: Paula Atherton gets us to “Feel It”

paulaphoto

(February 10, 2020) Prolific saxophonist/vocalist Paula Atherton has scored a handful of successes on the contemporary jazz charts the past few years. Previously signed to the late Maurice White’s Kalimba label, she worked with the likes of The Rippingtons, David Sanborn, and Hiroshima in live performances as both a headliner and supporting player.

Paula’s new single, “Can You Feel It,” finds her settling into a laid back yet spirited groove, accompanied by former Kalimba labelmate, keyboardist Greg Manning. He brings chops from his time as a musical director for Jonathan Butler and Brian McKnight to the kinetic arrangement, peppered with colorful guitar lines alongside Paula’s colorful sax playing. Greg’s solo piano insertions keep the rhythm flowing with finesse while Paula’s melodic focus is at once calm and energizing.
