First Listen: Soul legend Omar joins Soul Prophet on “Back to Dilla”

(February 27, 2025) Legendary UK soul singer Omar struck an upbeat and positive note when DJ Jason Eli and artist Soul Prophet asked him about the state of soul music during a recent podcast that appeared on the Groovadelica website. Groovadelica is a record label, live band/DJ event podcast founded by Eli, in which he works with a variety of artists, including Omar and Soul Prophet.

Omar said the current state of indie and underground soul artists make him confident that the music will remain true to its roots while also remaining relevant to what is happening right now. The big challenge for these artists remains the gatekeepers who decide who breaks through to the mainstream. However, the digital revolution gives these underground artists an opportunity to reach soul music lovers who are willing to look.

Omar’s interview comes at a time when he and Soul Prophet released their new song “Back To Dilla” on Groovadelica. “Back To Dilla” is a track that fuses Omar’s signature Afro-Caribbean, percussive funk sound with Soul Prophet’s nod to sleek, soul and funk infused hip-hop arrangements coming out of Detroit in the late 90s and early 2000s when the late J. Dilla was making musical magic with Slum Village and as a solo artist. Check out “Back To Dilla” by Soul Prophet (feat. Omar) here.
