First Look: Navy gives Island feel to Deniece Williams classic on “One Shot”

(May 27, 2021) Variety. Diversity. Inclusion. Artistic expression. In an era of reckoning, those are lofty ideals that all should aspire to. But when the shallow and narrow-minded deem themselves as the only tastemakers that matter, those who don’t ‘fit’ the ‘standard’ have to go with the flow or forge their own paths. Navy caught our interest by choosing the latter, and that truth is expressed in her latest single and musical mantra, “One Shot.”

Dominican-born and steeped in Caribbean music and Creole heritage, Navy turned her early, exploitive career turn with a former label into fuel for reclaiming her identity as an artist. Now a UK and US favorite known for fronting the reggae collective Taste of Pluto, Navy delivers “One Shot” as a declaration of self-assurance. You may not understand every word she drops initially, as each verse delivered in a hyper-speed, yet hypnotic patois, interlaced with the sampled mid-tempo chorus of the sublime Deniece Williams classic, “Free.” Savviness aside, could there have been a more appropriate sample or mission statement for 2021?

With her unmistakable native tongue and island-esque rhythms, Navy’s voice and musical vibe is one that you should familiarize yourself with: no better introduction exists than “One Shot,” a declarative assertion of a young woman owning her unique reach as a performer. Get into her style, or get out of the way……either way, Navy is staking her claim.
