(August 21, 2025) I think you guys are going to like this one. Najee, the legendary reed player, has assembled an all-star cast of singers on an album of originals, as well as covers of some great tunes originally performed by the likes of Angela Bofill and Natalie Cole.
The album is titled Under the Moon, Over the Sky, which is an homage to the late, great Angela Bofill’s beautiful 1978 song “Under the Moon and Over the Sky.” This First Listen features a rendition of that classic tune with the incomparable Regina Belle as lead vocalist.
This version captures the mystical and otherworldly nature of Bofill’s original, while also providing space for two artists who are steeped in soul and jazz to create and have a musical conversation with each other. Najee’s use of the flute captures the song’s ethereal feel, while Belle’s vocal are seductive, smokey and float over the arrangement.
