(July 16, 2024) Earlier this year, I had the honor of reviewing the single, “Sometimes” by Germany-based singer/songwriter Myriam-Catharina. For the summer she returns with a new release, “Spell”.
The track begins with a slow tempo drum and bass, then Myriam-Catharina comes in with the story of missing her man who lives thousands of miles away. So, to keep her in his mind, body and soul, she casts a “spell” that he cannot break.
M-C’s jazzy soulful voice does harken that of the departed Amy Winehouse but the comparison stops there. Miriam-Catharina keeps the vocals light-hearted without delving into darkness (think Norah Jones). Also, as with “Sometimes,” she keeps “Spell” short and sweet, like the pop gems from the 1960’s and early 1970’s. Would like to see more artists take that same approach nowadays.
As I said in my prior review, I looked forward to hearing more from Myriam-Catharina, and with “Spell” she doesn’t disappoint. Well done.
